The other is for a side mount where the wiring harness screws directly into terminals on the side of the battery. The first is a top mount which has a round hole in the middle to clamp around the battery post. There are two types of battery terminals. ![]() These large lugs connect the vehicle’s main electrical lines to the battery. Battery TerminalsĪll of the electrical connectors in a vehicle are useless with a battery terminal. However, many use a flat plastic terminal the bulbs slide in to. Tail lights are a little different, and the bulb socket really varies by vehicle. Unfortunately, these connectors allowed moisture to get into the terminals, which led to rusting and corrosion. However, older headlight bulbs used connectors that were usually flat blades. Many modern light bulbs use a cavity connector that attaches to a socket on the bulb. ©chanonnat srisura/ Light Socket Connector Cigarette lighter connectors have 12V female receptacles designed to be used as power outlets for electronic devices. This round port provides 12 volts of power to a coil to light cigarettes, but also doubles as a charger for electronic devices. However, another type of connector that is fading in vehicles is the 12V cigarette lighter. Almost all modern cars come with a USB connector for the infotainment system or at least charging. One type of connector that everyone should be familiar with is a USB connector. Closed-end connectors can also have a looping wire to close a circuit if needed. Instead of making a different harness for every single vehicle, manufacturers use closed-end connectors to cap the unused plugs. The wiring harnesses in many vehicles can accommodate other functions that come with different trim packages. Closed-End Electrical ConnectorsĬlosed-end connectors are a unique type of connection because they cap off a connection. Once removed, you can match the pin, replace it, and put the connector back together. Some of the pins are flat, while others are square or round. However, if you do need to make a repair, the connectors come apart by removing a metal pin that connects to the wire. The actual connections in a cavity connector can also vary by brand or manufacturer, making them very difficult to replace. Plus, most manufacturers use slightly different variations throughout the vehicle to prevent assemblers from making mistakes. For instance, the ones in the engine compartment or near the O2 sensors can withstand heat and moisture, while the ones inside the car are usually made with a cheaper plastic that is less durable. Additionally, manufacturers use cavity connectors both inside and outside of the vehicle.īecause this type of connection is so versatile, not all connectors are equal. There can be anywhere from one to six wires paired with a cavity connector, with anything larger being considered a header. It is commonly used as a general term that encompasses most of the connections on an automotive wiring harness. ©Noey smiley/ Cavity Electrical ConnectorsĬavity connectors are designed to connect multiple wires in one connection. Fuse boxes in an automobile are connected with header connectors. For instance, mating the engine wiring harness to the main wiring harness. Headers are also used to connect different wiring harnesses together. Additionally, headers under the hood have gaskets to seal the pins from the elements. In comparison, other headers may use a clip or even an elaborate latching mechanism. ![]() Some headers have a screw or bolt going through them to secure them to a device. The complicated thing about headers is that none are the same. Similarly, the instrument cluster and fuse box use a header connection. For instance, the wires going to the computers in a vehicle use header connections. Header connectors take large bundles of wires and mate them together or to a component in the vehicle. However, what really makes cars complicated is that each manufacturer tends to use unique connectors, but there are some similarities. Stranded wiring and specialty connections are necessary to withstand the vibration that cars face. For instance, cars use stranded wires rather than solid ones, which are used in homes. ![]() ![]() Additionally, older vehicles have completely different connection types, which can create confusion.Įlectrical connectors in automobiles are very different than the kind of wiring that is in your home. Manufacturers use dozens, if not hundreds, of different types of electrical connectors. Modern cars are very complex, with over a mile of wiring inside them. If you’re taking off a plastic trim panel on a car or taking a peek under the hood, you’ve probably noticed a wide range of wires and connectors. ![]()
