![]() ![]() Many analytical essays have been constructed to show that Gilman used her experience to craft a story that promotes feminist ideals, such as Gilbert and Gubar’s “A Feminist Reading of ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’” and Showalter’s “On ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’.” While the story does contain feminist aspects, it is not strictly a feminist tale as the essayists believe. Gilman draws the idea for this story from her actual experiences when she was treated for nervous prostration that developed out of postpartum depression. The woman becomes fascinated with the ugly, yellow wallpaper and is eventually driven mad by her obsession with it.
